UAE Free Zone Company Payroll Banking and WPS Setup 2026

UAE Wage Protection System (WPS) is mandatory for most UAE free zone employers. This requires paying employee salaries via electronic bank transfer through approved UAE banks. This guide covers WPS registration, payroll banking, and compliance for UAE free zone companies in 2026.

What Is UAE WPS?

The Wage Protection System is a MOHRE (Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation) initiative requiring UAE employers to pay salaries electronically via approved UAE banks. WPS creates a digital record of every salary payment, enabling MOHRE to detect salary delays or non-payment. Non-WPS-compliant employers face: work permit bans, fines (AED 5,000 per worker per month delayed), and potential licence suspension.

Which Free Zone Companies Need WPS?

All UAE free zone companies (excluding DIFC and ADGM, which have their own payroll frameworks) must use WPS when employing workers. WPS is enforced by MOHRE for all MOHRE-registered employment contracts. Even for single-employee companies, WPS compliance is mandatory.

WPS Registration Steps

WPS Salary File Format

UAE WPS salary files follow a standard MOHRE format (SIF — Salary Information File). Most payroll software (Bayzat, Zoho Payroll, Gusto UAE, Mawared) generates the SIF file automatically. For small companies, the SIF can be prepared manually using MOHRE’s Excel template.

DEWS and GPSSA — DIFC/ADGM Payroll Alternatives

DIFC and ADGM employees are covered by DEWS (DIFC Employee Workplace Savings) and GPSSA (General Pension and Social Security Authority) respectively — separate from the federal WPS scheme. DIFC employers must enrol employees in DEWS (Zurich-managed workplace savings) and contribute employer allocations monthly. ADGM employers use a similar GPSSA contribution framework. WPS does not apply to DIFC/ADGM employees.
