What is the Emirates ID?
The Emirates ID (issued by ICP — Identity and Citizenship Authority) is the official identity document for all UAE nationals and UAE residents. All UAE residents must hold a valid Emirates ID. The Emirates ID contains: full name, nationality, date of birth, Emirates ID number (15 digits), photograph, biometric fingerprints, and electronic chip (stores digital identity data). The Emirates ID is used for: verifying identity at government offices and banks, accessing government services (UAE Pass linked), travel within GCC countries (Emirates ID accepted as travel document by some GCC states), signing contracts and legal documents, and medical services (UAE national insurance verification).
Emirates ID Application Process for New Residents
After receiving a UAE entry permit (prior to visa stamping): Step 1 — complete UAE medical fitness test (at an approved centre). Step 2 — visit an ICP Customer Happiness Centre or authorised service centre to complete biometric registration (fingerprints and photograph). Step 3 — pay the Emirates ID fee (AED 100-370 depending on visa duration — AED 370 for a 2-year ID, AED 100 for 1-year student ID). Step 4 — Emirates ID is produced and ready for collection (or home delivery) within 3-5 working days. Step 5 — collect Emirates ID and complete visa stamping at GDRFA or through the relevant authority. Emirates ID Renewal
Emirates ID must be renewed when your UAE residence visa is renewed (they are linked). Renewal fee: AED 100-370 depending on visa duration. Renewal process: renewal is done concurrently with visa renewal through the free zone or employer. Apply at least 30 days before expiry to avoid lapses. Late renewal: no specific fine for late ID renewal, but an expired Emirates ID cannot be used for most services (bank transactions, government services will be blocked).
