ISO certifications are often required for UAE government tenders, ADNOC vendor registration, and large enterprise client contracts. Here is how to obtain ISO certification in the UAE.
Most Common ISO Certifications in UAE
- ISO 9001:2015 โ Quality Management System (most common; required for most UAE government tenders)
- ISO 14001:2015 โ Environmental Management System
- ISO 45001:2018 โ Occupational Health and Safety Management
- ISO 27001:2022 โ Information Security Management System (required for fintech, healthcare, IT companies)
- ISO 22000 โ Food Safety Management System (required for food manufacturers)
Step 1: Choose an Accredited Certification Body
ISO certificates are issued by third-party certification bodies (CBs) accredited by national accreditation bodies. In the UAE, accreditation is provided by ESMA (Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology) or international bodies (UKAS โ UK, DAkkS โ Germany, etc.). UAE-active accredited CBs: Bureau Veritas (UAE), SGS (UAE), TรV Rheinland Middle East, DNV (UAE), Lloyd’s Register (UAE). All of the above are internationally recognised โ check which CB your primary client or tender requires.
Step 2: Gap Analysis and Documentation
Before the formal audit, conduct a gap analysis to identify where your current processes fall short of ISO requirements. Develop your Quality Management System (QMS) or relevant management system documentation: Quality Manual, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions, and Forms. Timeline: 2โ6 months depending on your existing process maturity.
Step 3: Stage 1 and Stage 2 Audits
Stage 1 Audit (Document Review): The CB reviews your documentation to confirm it meets ISO standards. Takes 1โ2 days. Stage 2 Audit (Implementation Audit): The CB visits your premises to verify you are actually implementing the documented processes. Takes 1โ5 days depending on company size.
Step 4: Certification and Surveillance
If audits are satisfactory: certificate issued within 2โ4 weeks. ISO 9001 certificate validity: 3 years with annual surveillance audits. Cost: AED 8,000โ25,000 for initial certification + AED 3,000โ8,000 for annual surveillance audits.
