Checking company name availability is the essential first step in UAE company formation. A name that is already registered — or that violates UAE naming rules — will be rejected, delaying your setup. Here is how to check correctly.
UAE Company Naming Rules
Prohibited name elements: Names of UAE rulers or other Arab leaders (without approval), names of countries, international organisations, or UAE government bodies (without approval), words implying government or regulatory authority (e.g., “Authority,” “Ministry,” “Federal”), obscene or politically sensitive words, and names that are confusingly similar to existing registered companies. Permitted name elements: Founder’s personal name (can use first name or family name), descriptive names (must not be exclusively generic), invented brand names and acronyms, and Arabic-language names (required in some emirates).
How to Check Name Availability
Dubai DED (mainland): Visit ded.ae → “Name Reservation” to search existing registered names. DMCC: Use the DMCC name availability search at dmcc.ae before submitting your application. IFZA: Contact IFZA business services — they check availability as part of the free consultation process. UAE Trademark Register: Search trademarks.economy.gov.ae for existing trademark registrations — a registered trademark may block your company from using that name commercially even if it is available as a company name.
Company Name vs. Trading Name
Your company name (on the trade licence) does not need to be the same as your trading name (the name used in marketing). A company registered as “ABC Trading FZ LLC” can operate and brand itself as “TechBrand” — as long as “TechBrand” is registered as a trade name or trademark separately. Filing a trade name with DED or your free zone costs AED 500–1,000 and allows you to use a DBA (“doing business as”) name for marketing purposes.
