UAE Freelancer Tax Guide: VAT, Corporate Tax, and Obligations

📅 Last reviewed: August 4, 2026📋 By: UAE Freezone Compare Research TeamFact-checked by UAE Freezone Compare Editorial Team

UAE freelancers are often confused about their tax obligations. This guide clarifies exactly what taxes apply to UAE-based freelancers in 2025.

UAE Personal Income Tax: 0%

The UAE does NOT have personal income tax. UAE freelancers pay 0% income tax on their personal income β€” regardless of how much they earn. This is one of the primary reasons the UAE is attractive for self-employed professionals. This applies to both UAE nationals and UAE residents who are foreign nationals β€” as long as they are UAE residents and their income is earned in the UAE or as a UAE-registered freelancer.

UAE VAT for Freelancers

UAE VAT (5%) applies to freelancers above the registration threshold: mandatory registration: annual taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 (~USD 102,000). Voluntary registration: annual supplies exceed AED 187,500. Below AED 187,500: no VAT obligations β€” you do not charge VAT, do not file VAT returns, and have no VAT registration. Above AED 375,000: you MUST register for VAT, charge 5% on your invoices, file quarterly VAT returns, and pay VAT collected to the FTA. Exception: if all your clients are outside the UAE (export of services), your supplies may be zero-rated β€” still need to register above AED 375,000 but charge 0% VAT and claim back input VAT.

UAE Corporate Tax for Freelancers

Since June 2023: UAE freelancers operating under a freelance permit (as a “natural person” business) are subject to UAE Corporate Tax if their business revenue exceeds AED 1,000,000 per year. Below AED 1M revenue: CT exempt for natural persons conducting business activities. AED 1M–3M: eligible for Small Business Relief (0% CT, simplified return). Above AED 3M: standard CT rates apply (0% up to AED 375,000 taxable income, 9% above).
