How to Renew a UAE Free Zone Trade Licence: Step-by-Step

📅 Last reviewed: August 4, 2026📋 By: UAE Freezone Compare Setup TeamFact-checked by UAE Freezone Compare Editorial Team

UAE free zone trade licences must be renewed annually. Missing the renewal deadline results in late fees and, ultimately, licence cancellation. This guide covers the renewal process for most UAE free zones.

When to Start the Renewal Process

Start your renewal 30–60 days before the licence expiry date. Most free zones send renewal reminders by email 60 days before expiry. If you miss the renewal deadline, late fees apply (typically AED 200–500/month).

Step 1: Review Renewal Requirements

Check your free zone portal for any outstanding requirements: outstanding invoices (unpaid licence fees, office rent), updated KYC documents (if shareholders or directors have changed), audited financial statements (if required by your free zone), and any compliance filings (ESR, UBO register updates).

Step 2: Prepare Required Documents

Standard documents for renewal: current valid passport copies for all shareholders and directors, updated proof of address (utility bill or bank statement, issued within 3 months), renewed office lease agreement (if your flexi desk or office lease expired), and audited financial statements (previous financial year, for free zones that require them).

Step 3: Submit the Renewal Application

Log into the free zone’s client portal and initiate the renewal. Upload documents, confirm activity details, and select the renewal period (typically 1 year). Some free zones offer multi-year renewals at a discount (e.g., RAKEZ offers 15% discount for 3-year renewals).

Step 4: Pay the Renewal Fee

Pay the annual licence fee and any outstanding balances. Payment methods vary by free zone: bank transfer, credit card, or free zone portal payment gateway. Receipt is issued immediately upon payment.

Step 5: Renew Residence Visas

If your UAE residence visa is also expiring, renew it simultaneously. Note that the free zone will not renew your visa if your trade licence is expired. Always renew the licence before or simultaneously with visa renewal.
