📅 Last reviewed: August 4, 2026📋 By: UAE Freezone Compare Editorial TeamFact-checked by UAE Freezone Compare Editorial Team

DIFC is Dubai’s β€” and the region’s β€” premier financial centre, operating under a common-law legal framework in the heart of Dubai. Here is a complete 2025 business setup guide to DIFC.

DIFC Overview

DIFC is a special economic zone established in 2004, located between Dubai’s old CBD and the new Business Bay/Downtown area. DIFC has: its own legal system (common law, based on English law), its own courts (DIFC Courts β€” English-language, internationally recognised), its own financial regulator (DFSA β€” Dubai Financial Services Authority), 40,000+ professionals working within DIFC, 5,000+ registered companies, and 300+ financial institutions including the world’s top 12 banks. DIFC sits within Dubai β€” geography-wise it is a special zone entirely within Dubai, but legally it is a separate common-law jurisdiction.

DIFC Company Types

DIFC Ltd (private limited company): Equivalent to a UK Ltd. Most common structure for professional firms and financial institutions. Min 1 director, no minimum share capital requirement for non-regulated entities. DIFC PLC (public company): Can issue securities to the public. Regulated by DFSA if listing on NASDAQ Dubai. DIFC LLP (limited liability partnership): For professional services firms (law, accounting, consulting). Partners share profits; limited liability protection. DIFC Branch: Extension of a foreign company into DIFC. The foreign parent is liable for the branch.
