UAE Visa for Freelancers and Remote Workers in UAE 2026
UAE has created specific visa pathways for freelancers and remote workers, recognising the global shift to location-independent work. Options include the UAE Freelancer Permit, Green Visa, and the Dubai Virtual Working Programme. This guide covers UAE visa options for freelancers and remote workers in 2026.
UAE Freelancer Permit
- Available from: selected UAE free zones (TECOM Group, Fujairah Creative City, Umm Al Quwain free zone, Shams)
- Who it is for: individual professionals who want UAE residence without forming a company; 1 person, 1 visa
- Difference from company: freelancer permit = personal licence for the individual; free zone company = separate legal entity; freelancer permit is cheaper
- Cost: AED 7,500-15,000/year depending on free zone (less than a free zone company with office)
- Sectors: creative professionals (design, writing, media), IT, consulting, education; approval depends on which activities the free zone approves for freelancers
- Family sponsorship: freelancer permit CAN sponsor family; investor/freelancer visa types allow family sponsorship if minimum salary conditions met
UAE Green Visa for Freelancers
- Conditions: freelance permit from an approved UAE authority; AED 180,000+ annual income; recognised degree OR 5+ years experience
- Validity: 5 years (vs 2-3 year standard visa)
- Grace period: 6 months after expiry before needing to leave UAE
- Self-sponsored: no employer needed; you sponsor yourself
- Best for: established freelancers with consistent income above AED 15,000/month
Dubai Virtual Working Programme (Digital Nomad Visa)
- Introduced: 2021; one of the first in the world
- For: employees or business owners working remotely for a company or client based OUTSIDE UAE
- Validity: 1 year; renewable
- Cost: approximately USD 287 (AED 1,054) application fee + USD 640 (AED 2,350) health insurance minimum
- Requirements: employment contract or business registration outside UAE; minimum monthly income of USD 5,000 (approximately AED 18,000)
- Benefits: UAE residence; access to UAE bank account; healthcare; children can attend UAE schools
- Issued by: Dubai Tourism (DTCM) in partnership with ICA
Tax Implications for Remote Workers in UAE
- UAE personal income tax: 0% — regardless of whether income comes from UAE or abroad
- Home country tax: UAE residence does NOT automatically eliminate home country tax obligation; must check with home country tax rules (UK, USA, Australia etc. have specific non-residency rules)
- 183-day rule: many countries use a 183-day rule to determine tax residency; being in UAE 183+ days may trigger UAE tax residency, but this does not automatically remove obligations in strict home countries like USA
- UAE Tax Residency Certificate (TRC): UAE issues TRCs to UAE residents (183+ days); useful for claiming treaty benefits with countries that have double-tax agreements with UAE
