The UAE Virtual Work Programme (Remote Work Visa) allows foreign nationals employed by overseas companies to live in the UAE for 1 year and work remotely for their non-UAE employer. Here is everything you need to know.

UAE Remote Work Visa Overview

Launched in 2021 by Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), the UAE Virtual Work Programme is a 1-year renewable residency permit for remote workers. Key features: valid for 1 year (renewable), allows you to work remotely for your overseas employer from the UAE, does not require a UAE employer sponsor, and includes UAE residence visa (with Emirates ID).

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the UAE Remote Work Visa: be employed by a company outside the UAE (self-employed freelancers may also qualify with client contracts showing offshore income), earn at least USD 3,500/month (approximately AED 12,850/month) in salary or business income, provide a recent 3-month bank statement showing qualifying income, and hold health insurance valid in the UAE (you must purchase UAE-valid health insurance to qualify).

Application Process

Apply through: Dubai: remotework.ae (managed by DTCM). Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi DED or through ICA. Required documents: passport copy, employer confirmation letter (or client contracts if freelance), last 3 months’ bank statements showing USD 3,500+/month income, UAE-valid health insurance certificate, and passport photo. Fee: approximately USD 287 (around AED 1,055) for the programme. Additional visa issuance, Emirates ID, and medical test fees bring total cost to approximately AED 3,000–4,000.

Tax Implications of UAE Remote Work

Living in the UAE on a Remote Work Visa: you are a UAE tax resident with 0% personal income tax in the UAE. Your overseas employer continues paying you under their existing payroll — check with your home country’s tax authority whether you remain liable for home country income tax on UAE-sourced earnings.
