UAE Remote Work Visa: Overview
The UAE remote work visa allows foreign nationals employed by overseas companies to live in Dubai (or other UAE emirates) while working for their foreign employer. Duration: 1 year (renewable). Eligibility: employed by a foreign company (not a UAE employer), minimum monthly income of USD 5,000 (AED 18,360+), health insurance in the UAE, and a copy of employment contract or proof of self-employment income. The visa is issued by the UAE immigration authority — not through a UAE free zone company. You do NOT need a UAE business licence to qualify for the remote work visa.
UAE Remote Work Visa vs. UAE Freelance Permit
Remote Work Visa: for employees of foreign companies working remotely. No UAE business activity. UAE Freelance Permit: for self-employed individuals who want to legally invoice clients (including UAE clients) from within the UAE. A UAE Freelance Permit includes a UAE licence and visa bundled together (issued through free zones such as Shams, Dubai Media City, IFZA). For a foreign-employed remote worker: use the Remote Work Visa. For a self-employed consultant or freelancer: use a UAE Freelance Permit (or set up a UAE free zone company).
How to Apply for the UAE Remote Work Visa
Application: via the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai website, or through the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security). Documents required: passport copy, passport-size photo, employment contract or proof of income (3 months bank statements showing USD 5,000+/month), health insurance policy valid in UAE, and proof of accommodation in UAE (hotel booking or tenancy contract). Processing: 3-10 business days. Cost: AED 611 (application fee) + AED 500-800 (health insurance required). After approval: Emirates ID application required (AED 370).
