UAE Zakat Obligations for Businesses 2025

📅 Last reviewed: August 5, 2026📋 By: UAE Freezone Compare Comparison TeamFact-checked by UAE Freezone Compare Editorial Team

Zakat is an Islamic religious obligation on wealth. For UAE businesses owned by Muslims, understanding Zakat obligations is important. Here is the 2025 guide.

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — a mandatory annual charitable contribution for Muslims who hold wealth above the nisab (minimum threshold). Zakat on business: Muslim business owners are obligated to pay Zakat on their business wealth (not on the business itself as an entity, but on the Muslim shareholder’s share of zakatable assets). Rate: 2.5% of zakatable business wealth (after deducting liabilities) — paid annually at the end of the Hijri (Islamic) year.

Zakat in UAE Corporate Context

UAE Federal Law and Zakat: there is no UAE corporate Zakat law that applies to non-Muslim-owned businesses. UAE-listed companies with Muslim majority owners: some UAE listed companies voluntarily calculate and disclose Zakat payments. Free zone companies: there is no government Zakat collection for free zone companies (this differs from Saudi Arabia, where Zakat is collected by ZATCA). Individual Muslim shareholders of UAE companies: responsible for calculating and paying Zakat on their share of zakatable business assets personally. UAE Zakat Fund (Ministry of Community Development): collects and distributes Zakat in the UAE. Muslims can pay Zakat through the UAE Zakat Fund for distribution to eligible recipients.

Calculating Zakat on Business Assets

A simplified Zakat calculation for a business owner: identify zakatable assets (cash, receivables, inventory, investments held for trade). Deduct liabilities (loans, payables due within the year). Calculate net zakatable assets = (Zakatable assets – Liabilities). If net zakatable assets exceed the nisab (2025 approximate: AED 17,000+ in gold value): pay 2.5% x net zakatable assets. Consult a qualified Islamic scholar for a precise Zakat calculation for your specific business structure.
