UAE VAT Registration Threshold Checker Guide 2026
Not all UAE companies need to register for UAE VAT. Here is the guide to checking whether your UAE free zone company needs VAT registration in 2026.
In this guide:
UAE VAT Registration Thresholds
- Mandatory registration: If your UAE taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 in the previous 12 months OR expected to exceed AED 375,000 in the next 30 days
- Voluntary registration: You can voluntarily register if taxable supplies or expenses are between AED 187,500 and AED 375,000
- Below AED 187,500: Cannot register for UAE VAT (too small)
How to Check if You Need UAE VAT Registration
Step 1: Calculate Your UAE Taxable Supplies
- Include: Services provided to UAE clients; goods sold in UAE; any UAE-taxable supplies
- Exclude: Services to non-UAE clients (these are zero-rated exports; do NOT count toward threshold)
- Exclude: Exempt supplies (residential rent, local passenger transport)
Step 2: Check Against AED 375,000 Threshold
- Look back 12 months: Add all UAE taxable supplies from the past 12 months
- If above AED 375,000: Must register within 30 days
- If below AED 375,000 but trending up: Monitor monthly
Common VAT Registration Scenarios
- All clients outside UAE (pure export business): Zero-rated supplies; threshold likely never reached; no VAT registration needed in most cases
- Mix of UAE and international clients: Count only UAE-client portion toward threshold
- Pure UAE B2B services (consulting to UAE companies): Count all revenue toward threshold
Voluntary UAE VAT Registration — Benefits
- If you have significant UAE business expenses with VAT: Register voluntarily to reclaim input VAT
- Example: AED 50,000 in UAE expenses with 5% VAT = AED 2,500 reclaimable per year
