UAE Free Zone Company Trade Name and Brand Registration 2026
Choosing and protecting your UAE free zone company trade name and brand is an important part of setting up your business. Here is the 2026 guide.
UAE Trade Name vs Company Name
- Company name: The legal registered name of your UAE free zone company (e.g., “ABC Services FZE”). Registered with your free zone authority.
- Trade name: The name you use in market-facing contexts. Usually the same as or derived from the company name.
UAE Free Zone Company Naming Rules
UAE free zones have naming rules:
- Name must be unique within the free zone (and often UAE-wide)
- Cannot be identical or confusingly similar to an existing UAE company name
- Must include a designator: FZE (one shareholder), FZ-LLC (two or more shareholders), FZCO (some zones use this)
- Cannot contain words that imply government connection (e.g., “Royal”, “National”, “Government”) without special approval
- Cannot contain words that are protected by UAE law (e.g., “Emirates” without approval)
- Cannot contain offensive, politically sensitive, or religious words
UAE Trademark Registration — Protecting Your Brand
A UAE free zone company name registration does NOT protect your brand or logo — it only allows you to trade under that name. For brand protection, you need a trademark:
- UAE Trademark Registration: Apply to the UAE Ministry of Economy trademark office. Protects your brand across UAE (all 7 emirates). Valid 10 years, renewable. Application fee: AED 4,000-8,000+ depending on class count.
- GCC Trademark: A single application covering all 6 GCC countries through the GCC Patent Office.
- Madrid Protocol International Trademark: UAE is a party to the Madrid Protocol. File one application with WIPO to register your trademark in 100+ countries simultaneously.
UAE Company Name Reservation
When incorporating a UAE free zone company:
- Check name availability with your target free zone (typically instant online check)
- Reserve the name (typically 30-60 day reservation; some zones charge a small fee)
- Name is formally registered once the company is fully incorporated
