Protecting your intellectual property in the UAE requires registration with the Ministry of Economy’s IP division. Here is a guide to UAE trademark, patent, and copyright registration.

UAE Trademark Registration

UAE trademark registration gives you exclusive rights to use a name, logo, or brand identifier in the UAE for 10 years (renewable). How to register: visit trademarks.economy.gov.ae and submit your trademark application with: the trademark (wordmark or logo file), a description of the goods/services it covers (Nice Classification), and the applicant’s details (UAE company or individual). Fee: AED 750–3,500 per class (Nice Classification class). Processing: 6–12 months (includes a publication period for opposition). Trademark protection in the UAE does NOT automatically cover GCC countries β€” register separately in each Gulf country or use the GCC Trademark Office for a regional registration.

UAE Patent Registration

UAE patent registration is managed by the Ministry of Economy IP Department. Patents are valid for 20 years. Requirements: the invention must be new (not previously disclosed publicly), inventive (non-obvious to a person skilled in the field), and industrially applicable. UAE patent applications can be filed: nationally (via MOEC IP Department directly), via the Gulf Patent Office (GCC regional patent), or via PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) for international coverage including the UAE. Filing cost: AED 2,000–10,000 depending on complexity and whether professional IP counsel is used. Processing: 2–4 years for examination and grant.

Copyright in the UAE

Copyright in the UAE is automatic upon creation β€” no registration is required. Works protected: literary works, musical compositions, artistic works, software code, databases, film and video productions, and architectural designs. Copyright term: life of the creator + 50 years. The Ministry of Economy maintains an optional Copyright Registration service for evidentiary purposes β€” useful if you anticipate needing to prove first creation in a copyright dispute.
