The UAE is the world’s 16th largest trading nation and a global re-export hub. Choosing the right free zone for import/export directly impacts your customs costs, logistics access, and speed to market.
1. JAFZA — Best for Large-Volume Sea Freight Trading
JAFZA is the UAE’s premier import/export free zone, co-located with Jebel Ali Port. JAFZA companies can import goods into the free zone customs area duty-free, store them, and either re-export or clear customs for UAE mainland sale. JAFZA handles 3,000+ shipping lines and reaches 150+ countries via the port. Annual licence: AED 15,000–30,000. Best for: bulk commodity traders, manufacturers importing raw materials, and companies with high-volume sea freight.
2. RAKEZ — Best Value for Sea/Land Trading
RAKEZ offers trading licences from AED 9,000/year with access to Saqr Port — the world’s 8th largest bulk cargo port. Ideal for bulk commodity traders (cement, steel, aggregates, fertilisers). 30–40% cheaper than JAFZA. Best for: SME trading companies with moderate volumes that don’t need JAFZA’s full-service sea freight infrastructure.
3. Dubai CommerCity — Best for Cross-Border E-Commerce
Dubai CommerCity is purpose-built for cross-border e-commerce — it allows B2C direct import and same-day last-mile delivery to UAE end consumers. Located adjacent to Dubai International Airport. Annual licence: AED 18,000–30,000. Best for: cross-border e-commerce retailers importing directly from manufacturer to UAE consumer.
4. DMCC — Best for Commodity Trading with Banking Needs
DMCC hosts the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange (DGCX) and is the global hub for gold, diamonds, and soft commodity trading. DMCC commodity trading licences are widely recognised by international commodity trade banks (HSBC Trade, Citi Trade, Standard Chartered). Annual cost: AED 20,000–40,000. Best for: commodity traders who need trade finance, letters of credit, and international commodity bank relationships.
Key Consideration: Customs Registration
All UAE import/export companies need a Customs Registration with UAE Federal Customs Authority in addition to their free zone licence. Customs registration enables clearance of goods at UAE ports and airports. Without this registration, you cannot clear goods through UAE customs.
