UAE Trade Finance — Letters of Credit and Documentary Collections Guide 2026
UAE is one of the world’s top trade hubs, and UAE banks provide extensive trade finance facilities for import-export businesses. Understanding Letters of Credit (L/C), Documentary Collections, and other trade finance tools is essential for UAE traders. This guide covers UAE trade finance for 2026.
Letter of Credit (L/C) — Basics
- What is an L/C: a bank guarantee issued by the buyer’s bank to the seller’s bank; guarantees payment when the seller presents compliant shipping documents
- Why use L/C: gives both buyer and seller security in international trade; seller knows they’ll be paid if documents comply; buyer knows they won’t pay until documents (proof of shipment) are presented
- Irrevocable L/C: cannot be changed without both parties’ consent; most international trade uses irrevocable L/Cs
- SWIFT: L/Cs are transmitted via SWIFT banking network (MT700 message type)
UAE Banks Providing L/C Services
- Emirates NBD: one of the strongest UAE banks for trade finance; large international correspondent banking network
- FAB (First Abu Dhabi Bank): UAE’s largest bank; extensive trade finance facilities; strong correspondent banking
- HSBC UAE: global bank with HSBC’s global trade network; preferred by multinational importers using UAE hub
- ADCB: strong trade finance for Abu Dhabi-based businesses; good for UAE-India and UAE-Pakistan trade corridors
- RAKBank: trade finance available; good for smaller to mid-size trading companies
L/C Costs for UAE Businesses
- L/C issuance fee: typically 0.125%-0.25% of L/C value per quarter; minimum AED 500-1,000
- Confirmation fee (if confirming L/C from high-risk country): 0.5%-2% per quarter on top of issuance
- Advising fee: AED 200-500 (for the advising bank in exporter’s country)
- Amendment fee: AED 200-500 per amendment
- Discrepancy fee: AED 200-500 if documents have discrepancies requiring waiver
Documentary Collection (D/C)
- Cheaper than L/C: bank handles document transfer but does NOT guarantee payment
- D/P (Documents against Payment): buyer only gets shipping documents after paying
- D/A (Documents against Acceptance): buyer gets documents after signing acceptance (promise to pay later)
- Risk: less security than L/C; seller relies on buyer’s willingness to pay; suitable for trusted trading partners
- Cost: 0.1%-0.2% of value; AED 300-1,000 minimum per transaction
UAE Supply Chain Finance
- Supplier financing: UAE banks extend credit to UAE importers to pay international suppliers; extends working capital cycle
- Accounts receivable finance: UAE export companies can discount (sell) their export receivables to UAE bank for immediate cash
- Invoice financing: similar to receivables; UAE-focused invoices from UAE buyers financed by UAE bank; 70-90% advance rate
