UAE offshore companies (RAK ICC and JAFZA offshore) can open bank accounts in the UAE, but the process is more restrictive than for free zone operating companies. Here is what offshore company owners need to know about UAE banking.
Can UAE Offshore Companies Open UAE Bank Accounts?
Yes β UAE offshore companies (RAK International Corporate Centre and JAFZA Offshore) can open UAE bank accounts, but most high-street UAE banks will not serve them. The banks that accept UAE offshore company accounts: Emirates NBD (on case-by-case basis, usually for HNWI with existing relationships), HSBC DIFC (private banking for larger amounts), Commercial Bank International (CBI β more flexible than tier-1 banks), and UAB (United Arab Bank β historically more offshore-company friendly).
Why UAE Banks Restrict Offshore Company Accounts
UAE offshore companies: have no physical office, no UAE employees, and no UAE business activity (they are designed for international holding, IP holding, and asset protection β not UAE operating activity). Banks classify offshore companies as high-risk entities under CBUAE AML guidelines because their beneficial ownership and source of funds are harder to verify than a standard free zone operating company. The consequence: either rejection or very lengthy Enhanced Due Diligence process.
Alternative Banking for UAE Offshore Companies
Many UAE offshore company owners bank outside the UAE: Belize, BVI, Seychelles, and Singapore private banks accept UAE offshore company accounts. For European access: Lithuania EMI licences (PaySera, Satchel) and UK EMIs (Wise Business) are accessible to UAE offshore companies with proper documentation. Note: the UAE offshore company’s bank account must be declared to the local tax authority of any shareholder who is a tax resident in a country with controlled foreign corporation (CFC) rules.
